Which manual these numbers come from
The 172 has been in production since 1956 with several different engines. The figures below come from the service manual covering the Continental O-300 and Lycoming O-320 airplanes, which is most of the classic fleet. If you fly a later model like the 172S with its IO-360, your POH and maintenance manual are the authority and some numbers will differ. When in doubt, check the manual for your serial range. What oil does a Cessna 172 use
For normal operations, aviation grade ashless dispersant (AD) oil. That’s your Phillips 66 X/C, AeroShell W series, and similar. The manual ties the requirement to the engine maker’s spec, so Lycoming engines need oil conforming to Lycoming Spec 301 and Service Instruction 1014, and Continental engines need oil meeting Continental spec MHS-24.
In practice, any current aviation AD oil from a major brand meets these. What you cannot do is run automotive oil. Car oil has additives that don’t belong in an air-cooled aircraft engine, and it isn’t approved. Don’t do it.
There’s one big exception to the AD oil rule, and it catches people constantly.
Break-in oil for new and overhauled engines
New or freshly overhauled engines don’t get AD oil. They get straight mineral oil (non-detergent, MIL-L-6082 spec) until break-in is done.
The reason is counterintuitive. AD oil is slippery by design, and a new engine actually needs some friction so the rings can wear into the cylinder walls and seat properly. Put AD oil in too early and the rings never seat, and you end up with an engine that drinks oil for the rest of its life.
The schedule looks like this. Run mineral oil for the first 25 hours, then do an oil change (drain, clean the screens, new filter if you have one) and refill with mineral oil again. Keep running it until you hit 50 total hours or oil consumption stabilizes, whichever comes first. Then switch to AD oil and stay there.
If you just bought a plane with a fresh overhaul, ask the seller or the shop what’s in the sump before you top it off with the wrong thing.
What weight oil for the temperature
The manual gives viscosity by ambient temperature, and it differs by engine.
For Lycoming O-320 airplanes running AD oil:

The ranges overlap on purpose, and the manual’s rule for overlap is simple: use the lighter grade. In Texas that means most people pick one summer weight and never think about it again. Up north, seasonal weight changes are a real thing.
Multiviscosity oils (15W-50, 20W-50) postdate the original chart but are approved under the current revisions of those same Lycoming and Continental specs, which is why half the fleet runs them year round.
Cessna 172 oil capacity and minimum for flight
Total capacity is 8 quarts, or 9 quarts if an external spin-on filter is installed, since the filter holds about a quart.
Here’s the part that surprises new owners: you usually don’t fill it to capacity.
The minimum for flight is 6 quarts. Below that, you don’t go. For normal flights under 3 hours, fill to 7 quarts. For long cross-countries, fill to the full mark.
Why not just top it off every time? Because the engine will blow anything much above 7 quarts out the crankcase breather and paint your belly with it. Filling to 7 for local flying isn’t being cheap, it’s what the book says. If your belly is always oily and consumption seems high, check whether you’re overfilling before you blame the engine.
How to check the oil
Two rules from the manual that most people learn from an old-timer instead:
- Park the plane as level as you can. A sloped ramp gives a false reading.
- If the engine just ran, wait 5 to 10 minutes before pulling the dipstick so the oil can drain back into the sump.
While you’re looking at the level, look at the oil itself. The manual is blunt about this: if the oil on the dipstick looks dirty, change it, along with cleaning the screens and replacing the filter. Hours since the last change don’t matter if the oil is filthy now.
How the 172 oil system works
It’s a wet-sump, full-pressure system. A gear-type pump pulls oil from the sump through a suction screen, pushes it through the firewall-mounted oil cooler, then through filtration. Older airplanes have a pressure screen, and many have the optional external spin-on filter instead. From there a relief valve regulates pressure and the oil feeds the main bearings, connecting rods, and valvetrain through drilled passages. Cylinder walls get splash lubrication off the rods. Everything drains back to the sump by gravity and the loop repeats.
Two details worth knowing. The cooler has a bypass valve, so cold congealed oil skips the cooler until things warm up. And if you ever chase a high oil temp problem, one of the first checks is feeling the cooler core: hot engine but cold cooler means oil is bypassing when it shouldn’t be.
Cessna 172 oil change cost
At a shop, expect somewhere in the range of $150 to $300 depending on local labor rates, whether they cut and inspect the filter, and what oil you’re paying for. It’s typically an hour or so of labor plus parts.
Doing it yourself, the consumables run roughly $80 to $120: seven or eight quarts of aviation oil at $10 to $15 a quart, a filter around $25 to $35, plus a crush gasket and safety wire. Add an oil analysis kit for about $20 to $30 if you send samples out, which you should, because the trend data is worth far more than the kit costs.
So the DIY savings are real but modest per change. The bigger win is knowing your engine, and catching things like metal in the filter yourself.
Can I change the oil myself
If you’re the owner and you hold at least a private pilot certificate, yes. An oil change is preventive maintenance under 14 CFR Part 43, Appendix A, which means you can legally do it on an aircraft you own and operate (not one used for hire).
Legal doesn’t mean casual, though. The procedure has details that matter.
Warm the engine to operating temperature first so the contaminants drain with the oil. Drain via the quick-drain valve or the sump plug. Pull the filter, and cut the old element open to inspect the pleats for metal. Finding nothing is the normal, boring, correct outcome. Finding flakes or chips means stop and call your A&P before this airplane flies again.
Install the new filter with new gaskets and torque it to spec (the filter stud on these is 20 to 25 lb-ft), refill with the right grade and quantity, run it up, check for leaks, re-check torque warm, then safety wire the filter. Then the part people forget: the logbook entry. Owner-performed preventive maintenance must be logged with a description of the work, the date, and your name and certificate number. No entry, no legal oil change.
